Do HEPA Air Filters work? In this “California smoky season” I used an air quality measuring device (which detects concentrations of PM2.5) to see if the apartment really benefits from having an air filter on. The results are in and the difference is brutal...
Inside: 34µg/m^3 (safe)
Outside: 325µg/m^3 (hazardous)
—————
Where: Colma near SF.
Date: November 10 2018
As of the time of this video there are ongoing massive fires in Paradise and Chico (up north) and Hill and Woolsey (SoCal). The bad weather in this video is caused by the smoke coming from the Camp Fire up north.
—————
FYI - On non-fire days, the outside of the apartment registers between 12 and 30µg/m3 and the inside (filter on) registers between 1 and 6 µg/m3. If the filter is off, both inside and outside register the exact same thing.
It agrees with the reported air quality posted in national weather websites (+- 5), so I have learned to trust this devise (although I was skeptical at first).
—————
Additional Info: I am in favor of the Effective Altruists movement. A well-read author within this social movement is Robin Hanson, who argues that Health Care is more about showing off that you care than actually helping people. If we actually cared about our health and those of our loved ones, he says, we would focus on promoting interventions that truly improve our health such as better air quality. Indeed, air quality is one of the most important predictors of health (others being things like diet, exercise, and sleep).
As you can see, a HEPA air filter is a very effective way of reducing particulate matter indoors. If you care about your health and the health of your loved ones, I highly recommend getting an air filter. The investment will pay for itself in healthcare bills in the long run, and it will make you feel better day in and day out.
Infinite Bliss!

PS: Here is an update from the day after in which I dispel some of the worries people had about the measuring devise and the air filter. (youtube.com/watch?v=FDYwyMqEK58)
