The Father's Role: Investigators determined Emmanuel died after suffering severe, repeated physical abuse at the hands of Jake Haro. Jake pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, child assault, and filing a false police report late last year and is currently serving a sentence of 25-to-life in state prison.

During the Friday hearing before Judge Jerry Yang, both sides agreed to waive the typical preparation time to move immediately into the punishment phase. Prosecutors framed Rebecca Haro's culpability as a catastrophic "sin of omission." While there was no evidence that she personally physically struck or shook Emmanuel, prosecutors stated that she was fully aware of the escalating abuse and the infant's deteriorating condition. Instead of intervening, protecting her son, or seeking medical care, she allowed the abuse to happen and actively helped her husband attempt to cover up the crime. Haro, who did not formally address the court with her own statement, was reported to be audibly sobbing and on the verge of tears throughout the prosecutor's remarks.
To date, the remains of baby Emmanuel have never been found.
