A woman asks about the implications if, on future retreats, everyone attending already understood the non-dual teaching. If attendees deeply recognised their true nature and that they share their being, how might that change the event?
Rupert says: ‘Many people who know the nature of their being still come to these gatherings just for the utter joy of being together. And there are others amongst us who, whilst they may have a deep intuition, may not quite know their true nature clearly and therefore may want to explore it in meditations and conversations. It’s very important on a retreat that there are both types of people.
‘And if there aren’t sceptical, argumentative people who push and test on our retreats, then certain aspects of the teaching would become static. There would be no need for new expressions, pathways or metaphors and the teaching would die and become a religion.
‘And by the way, I make absolutely no distinction between so-called ‘people who have recognized their true nature’ and so-called ‘people that haven’t’ – that’s an artificial division necessary to answer the question. All I really see in all of you are the beautiful, sweet, innocent beings that you really are.’
