Know Your Meme | It's Been 5 Years Since The Internet Decided to "Storm Area 51" to "See Them Aliens" @KnowYourMeme | Uploaded September 2024 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
In September 2019, a viral internet meme led to the "Storm Area 51" event, originating from a Facebook post titled "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us." Created as a joke, the event's goal was to raid the highly classified U.S. Air Force facility in Nevada, famously associated with UFO and alien conspiracy theories, to "see them aliens." The post quickly gained traction, amassing over two million RSVPs and sparking widespread media coverage. As the scheduled date approached on September 20th, authorities issued warnings against trespassing on military property. On the day, around 1,500 people gathered in nearby towns like Rachel and Hiko for festivals dubbed "Alienstock," but only a few dozen ventured to the gates of Area 51. The gatherings were largely peaceful and festive, featuring costumes and alien-themed festivities. While a few individuals were detained for minor infractions, the event concluded without significant incidents.
