‘Its a new day at San Fernando East': Brian Manning backs mom Hazel and Team Unity— no regrets 'I would do it again if I had to''
San Fernando East MP Brian Manning says he has no regrets about challenging elements within his own party, insisting that his responsibility to constituents comes before political considerations.
Manning made the declaration on Thursday as he addressed the media at his San Fernando East constituency office, where he also gave an update on the expected reorganisation of the constituency executive.
His comments come amid an ongoing internal dispute with former Constituency chairman Patricia Alexis and the People's National Movement leadership (PNM), which has resulted in significant attention being placed on the San Fernando East constituency.
Manning said the controversy has not distracted him from his work as the constituency's elected representative.
“We haven't really allowed other matters to interrupt the work that we do here in San Fernando East,” he said.
Manning pointed to his regular Thursday meetings with members of the public as evidence that his constituency work remains his priority.
“Today is that day, I'm here doing the job that I'm always doing,” he said. “We haven't allowed the distractions to interrupt our work here in San Fernando East. We keep going and serving our constituents no matter what.”
Asked whether the public's attitude towards him had changed following the controversy, Manning claimed the response had been overwhelmingly positive.
“I think actually constituents in San Fernando East like me even more now, to be honest,” he said.
According to Manning, constituents had previously raised concerns with him about the functioning and representation of elements within the constituency.
He said he took those concerns to the party's leadership and ultimately decided that he had to speak out.
“They felt there was an element in this constituency that just did not sit right with constituents,” Manning said, adding that he believed the situation did not represent the PNM in the manner it should.
“And I decided that I would be the person to stand up and say that enough is enough,” he said.
Manning said he believes the constituency is now entering what he described as “a new day”.
He also rejected any suggestion that he had been pressured because of his position during the dispute.
“Not at all. If I had to do it again tomorrow, I would,” Manning said.
“My job is to stand up and represent the people of San Fernando East.”
He maintained that his approach would remain the same even when his position does not align with some views within the party.
“It is constituents first, and I will always operate in such a manner,” he said.
Manning further claimed that he has “overwhelming support” from both PNM members and constituents in San Fernando East.
“The constituents, as I said, were just as tired of the nonsense they were seeing as I was,” he said.
He also alleged that a small group of people had been benefiting from millions of dollars in contracts while others in the constituency were struggling.
“We couldn't have a handful of people enjoying millions of dollars in contracts while the rest of the constituency was struggling to survive,” Manning said.
Manning confirmed that he has spoken with the political leader of the PNM about the situation.
He described the discussion as cordial and said the two sides discussed the way forward for San Fernando East.
