It Must Be Now! (IMBN!) was created in response to the racial reckoning of 2020. Seven IMBN! events for the MIT community were held throughout 2021 and 2022, with three participating composers: Terri Lyne Carrington, Braxton Cook, and Sean Jones. They each created works for MIT musicians on overall themes of racial justice, which were premiered at an historic concert on May 6, 2022 at Kresge Auditorium. The performance involved 150 student musicians, all three composers, and other guest artists including turntablists, vocalists, spoken word artists, a dancer, and the renowned visual artist and filmmaker, Mickalene Thomas. Music Director and project initiator/leader Dr. Fred Harris felt that an artistic response was needed with a multi-disciplinary effort that reflected the magnitude and urgency of the situation. The project was a collaboration with MIT’s Center for Arts, Science & Technology and MIT Music and Theater Arts. The project and event was produced by Susan Wilson.
