Generically using reason doesn't make the methodology of joining the Catholic Church vs joining Protestant sects the exact same. The difference is between finding the Church to be divinely established and entrusted/guided by God to teach true doctrine vs trying to find true doctrine on your own from the Bible and only thereafter finding a group who agrees with you. In the first case, you submit to the teachings of the Catholic Church because what She teaches must be true. In the second case, you conditionally submit to a Protestant church or tradition only insofar as they agree with your interpretation of Scripture. The extent to which they have authority over you ends when there's a disagreement and you leave for an alternative tradition.
