With schools facing Covid19 protocols and limiting visiting personnel in their buildings, student teachers at the University of Saskatchewan faced a significant challenge this spring: where would they complete their in-classroom teaching placement? Fortunately, because of the way that the Sun West Distance Learning Centre (DLC) delivers distance learning, the DLC could help out.
For three weeks in May, the DLC hosted fourteen student teachers who worked with a cooperating teacher and their students to experience teaching at the DLC. Student teachers helped with instruction, tutorials, and virtual classroom management. They also took part in professional development sessions to learn skills like how to build an online community and even developed a lesson plan for online delivery.
“My experience at the DLC has been overwhelming – but also amazing!” said student teacher Kearcy Bradley. “Being able to learn all about teaching and design [for distance learning] has been eye-opening and has created a new area of interest for me. I’m really glad that I got this opportunity to create the lesson and be at the DLC.” DLC Student Teachers](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Df1qBSj50E8/mqdefault.jpg)
