Peter Buttigieg is expected to announce his candidacy for President on Palm Sunday in South Bend, Ind. where Notre Dame University is located. David Axelrod and the Pritzger family were some of the main supporters for Obama and now they appear to be main supporters for Buttigieg. Buttigieg claims to be a man of Christian faith. In fact he challenges former Indiana Governor, Mike Pence, as to his faith.
Both of his parents were professors at Notre Dame. His dad was a former Jesuit who became a follower of Antonio Gramsci and Michel Foucault earning him the label of cultural Marxist. A strong belief in evolution is most likely at the root of the father and son. Notre Dame University and St. Joseph high school where Peter Buttigieg went to school teach theistic evolution exclusively. When Peter was at Harvard around the turn of the Millennium the popular preacher Peter J. Gomes was chaplain at Harvard. In his book, "The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart" written in 1996 Gomes explains that homosexuality is not a sin. Gomes is black and homosexual. He received over 40 honorary degrees before he died in 2011. Chapter 8 is titled The Bible and Homosexuality: The Last Prejudice". He starts out with slavery being the first frontier. He admits that scripture and tradition strongly support the idea that the slave/master relationship involves no sin as long as the slave is not mistreated etc. Surprisingly he mostly agrees with Bishop John Henry Hopkins of Vermont and his book written in 1864 supporting the southern position. But Gomes says that since most every American believes slavery is wrong despite scripture and tradition we must use our moral imagination to simply find a way to have the Bible say slavery is wrong. He next tackles anti-semitism and women's rights and applies similar logic.
Even though scripture and tradition say that the Jews killed Christ and they must repent and believe on Christ to be saved, Gomes claims the Jews are saved by their covenant with God through Moses. Likewise regarding women's rights in the Church Gomes admits the scripture says they are not to exercise authority over men. They are to be silent in the Church and are not permitted to speak. But using our moral imagination we can be freed from all the old interpretations and discover those we prefer instead. It seems high likely that Peter Buttigieg follows Chaplain Gomes in this way of understanding how to interpret the Bible.
