Swatching on their swatch sheet:
Some colors took awhile to activate (lilac purple, cobalt blue, pthaleiocyanine green, payne's grey)
Some colors have a weird grittiness to them (quin rose)
Some colors glob up on the brush
Swatching on Baohang:
Many of the colors rush to fill the wash of water
Not necessarily as much granulation as I'd like to see, but this isn't uncommon for Chinese watercolors
Color Mixing:
Some decent 2ndary mixes
No real neutrals, which I found surprising
colors dry quite a bit more muted than they went down
Skipping the wet into wet test
Fieldtests:
Wildflowers:
there's voice for this
Vertical rose painting:
no voice for this
These REALLY fall apart when you try to do washes with them, so make sure you work in saturation.
Pros and cons:
Pros:
Super compact size
Decent color selection for sketching and watercolor doodling
Paints can be pried out and replaced with your favorite paints
You can spray paint the interior lid or use duct tape to make it a mixing surface, OR, you can add water and use it as a small wash cup.
Sits stable on a desk (I've bought a lot of mini watercolor kits that don't/cant)
Cons:
Paint colors are weak and dry kinda dull
Paints fall apart when there's a lot of water, so they work better with strong saturation and limited color mixes.
That quin rose is awful, it granulates in a really weird and muddy way and mixes poorly.
Who is this for:
I think this is perfect for watercolor sketching on the go (urban sketching, plein air sketching), but my IDEAL audience for this is clandestine painters- folks who need a lil art break during lunch, who work in classrooms or desk jobs, and want to scratch that art fix discreetly. This set is absolutely perfect for that. It's really best for small sketches with vibrant color- something quick and immediate. The limited mixing space is probably for the best, colors don't stay saturated when mixed, and generally dry less saturated than the sum of it's parts, and washes are uninspired.
