Anyone who’s brewed with a Hario V60 knows that this ritual comes with unpredictability. Some mornings the cup is electric — bright, layered, crystal clear. Other days, drawdown drags past four minutes, leaving bitter, dry finishes. Precision is rewarded, mistakes magnified.
Enter the Hario Neo. At first glance, it feels familiar: the same 60-degree cone, the same single outlet, compatible with standard V60 filters, lightweight Tritan resin, minimal and handle-less. The real change lives inside.
Instead of spiral ribs, the Neo has 72 ultra-fine vertical ribs merging into nine larger channels at the base. Water is guided straight down, air channels behind the filter prevent suction, and stalling is minimized. The result? Faster, more consistent drawdown and a brewing experience that feels more predictable.
With a classic V60, small variations in pouring, agitation, or water level can dramatically shift extraction. The Neo, however, behaves like a slightly more forgiving sibling — same DNA, but less reactive to minor inconsistencies.
For this review and brewing test: fresh coffee ground on the Option-O Lagom P80, measured with the Hario Polaris scale, poured from the Hario Alpha kettle. Standard recipe: 15g coffee, 1:16.5 ratio, brew time ~2:30–3:00. Bloom drains quickly, center-out pours cover the bed evenly, and drawdown remains smooth.
The Neo also softens filter-paper differences — thin, thick, or high-flow Hario Meteor filters still impact clarity, but less dramatically. Faster drawdown also allows experimentation with slightly finer grind sizes, unlocking sweetness and higher extraction without stalling. Of course, physics still applies — extremely fine grinds or aggressive agitation can clog the brew.
Pairing the Neo with the Hario Switch base creates a hybrid brew: controlled immersion during bloom, then a fast, clean drawdown. The vertical ribs maintain airflow, allowing smooth drainage once the valve opens. A playground for clarity, body, and flavor balance.
So where does the Neo sit? Not above the V60, not replacing it — just beside it. Beginners gain V60-style cups without mastering delicate pouring. Intermediate brewers frustrated with stalling get a more manageable extraction. Experienced home baristas gain another tool for exploration.
