Travelling between stars requires the rockets with exhaust velocities that are a significant fraction of the speed of light, and that's the kind of speeds you get when you harness the power of E=mc^2 and convert matter into energy.
That's what Eugener Sanger was thinking when he proposed the antimatter rocket in the 1950's, but his vision of a rocket driven by an intense beam of photons is not the reality of what's possible with antimatter.
Assuming you can solve the problems of creating and storing antimatter the power and scale of the propulsion systems involved can reach scales that make sci-fi starships look small.
