William Shatner directed this absolutely bonkers disaster of a film in 1989. Gene Roddenberry (the creator of Star Trek) said that he doesn't consider this movie to be canon. Now, 33 years later, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has officially made Star Trek V: The Final Frontier canon with the reintroduction of Spock's half-brother, the laughing Vulcan, Sybok.
With this shock reveal cameo at the end of "The Serene Squall", I decided to go back and rewatch The Final Frontier for the first time since I first saw it in middle school. I was no film critic back then, and I absolutely adored everything that had to do with Star Trek, but even then I knew this movie was not good.
Infamous moments like Kirk's "What does God need with a starship?", Uhura's fan dance, Scotty saying "I know this ship like the back of my hand" then immediately hitting his head on a low hanging ceiling and falling unconscious, Sarek apparently having an affair with a Vulcan princess to birth Sybok, a three-breasted cat lady exotic dancer, and many many other bizarre scenes can all be found in the fifth motion picture of the original series crew.
