Meshtastic is exciting to hackers because it feels like a loophole in the restrictions imposed on transmitting encrypted information in the United States on licensed frequencies.

Because Meshtastic uses unlicensed spectrum, it doesn't need to play by these rules. Unfortunately, recent proposals may change this.
