Is Math the New Doctor? How AI Helps Detect Disease
featuring MOST Fellow Uchenna Okorie
April 25, 2026
Using a large coordinate grid and a set of magnetic “patient” figures, students will simulate how AI systems classify whether someone may be sick or healthy. Each magnetic figure represents a patient with symptom tags (e.g., fever and cough). Students will place patients on a coordinate grid, identify patterns, and draw a “decision boundary” line to separate healthy from sick cases. They will then apply a simple mathematical rule and calculate weighted scores to simulate how AI makes predictions. Through hands-on movement, visual modeling, and group discussion, students experience how algebra, graphing, and probability are used in real-world disease detection. The activity makes abstract math concepts tangible while emphasizing how data-driven decisions can support doctors in modern medicine.
