Panorama season is over. It's vertical Milky Way season now! What's different? Panorama Milky Way is a sky image with a foreground that complements it. Vertical Milky Way season is a landscape photo with a sky to accent it. Astrophotography beginners, in order to master Milky Way Photography you need to get out for vertical Milky Way! Flip your summer instincts once the core stands up and focus on finding a beautiful landscape photography photo then bring it home with the added bonus of a Milky Way laden night sky.
There is a folder on my computer called PromoPics that holds my ten favorite astrophotography photos I have ever taken. Only three of them are vertical Milky Way season images. So am I the last person who should be defending vertical season?
In this video, I go over my favorite astrophotography tips for all things vertical Milky Way Photography by letting you know what went well and what could have gone better in all my rejected images. Tips like: anything between you and your main subject has to be deliberate. Nothing in that space should be an afterthought. Behind your subject it can be more forgiving, but everything from the bottom of your composition between the camera and your important foreground subject should be deliberately curated and distraction free from afterthoughts.
In my opinion, once the core tilts toward the horizon, gets cut in half and you lose my baby the Rho Ophiuchi behind the horizon, the core stops being prominent enough to carry the image. Without that, you need the foreground to do the bulwark of interest, without that your vertical Milky Way composition will be boring.
Locations include Mono Lake, Goosenecks State Park, Thor's Well, the
Bonneville Salt Flats, Cape Kiwanda and Secret Beach on the Oregon
coast plus the South Island of New Zealand!
