In the early 90s almost every band that came out of Seattle was labeled as “grunge”. Seemingly regardless of their actual sound.
Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam all have vastly different sonic qualities and attitudes.
Yet we always need a reference point, so labels get created and sometimes they stick.
