Ever since GoPro released its Mission 1 Pro, users were complaining about the loss of infinite focus and the increased minimal focusing distance.
Divers reported that when they are trying to eliminate one of these issues (minimal focusing distance) by adding a wide angle conversion lens, the other problem (no infinite focus) becomes even bigger.
That led me to perform a test with the Mission 1 Pro in a controlled indoor pool environment to judge for myself the size of this problem we are looking at and what possible solutions could be.
In this video I demonstrate how adding different wet lenses alter the minimal focusing distance and the background blur. These were the lenses I used in my test:
1. AOI UWL-03 Wide Angle conversion lens (bit.ly/3T5jSCX)
2. Divevolk Macro Pro +18 (bit.ly/41lsF9d)
3. Nauticam MFO (Midrange Focus Optimiser) lens (bit.ly/3Ugv8Ad)
4. Nauticam SMC3 (Super Macro Converter 3) lens (bit.ly/3UmWkx8)
The verdict?
Yes, we have a problem with the depth of field on the Mission 1 Pro, especially when using it in combination with wide angle conversion lenses.
The solution?
Don't use any wide angle conversion wet lenses underwater when shooting wide angle. Only use them for close-focus wide-angle type of shots. Macro wet lenses can be used without issues (other than some vignetting problems) as the background blur is actually desired when using macro.
