David Ian Howe | Is flintknapping cultural appropriation? @davidianhowe | Uploaded June 2023 | Updated October 2024, 5 hours ago.
PLEASE, please watch till the end if you have strong opinions on either side of the argument. I promise you will probably agree with me, and I'd love to know your thoughts.
Flintknapping is the science and craft of making stone tools. It is a craft that first began with (maybe) Australopithecus, (but certainly) Homo habilis. And has been practiced around the world for millennia. It only recently fell out of practice once metal tools took over as the main material for human tech.
Knap-ins are a place where people come together to practice this craft, trade rock, and sell finished pieces they make.
I recently went to a few, and made some pretty fun connections to hunter-gatherer aggregations. But I also made some fun anthropological and cultural observations regarding modern American culture.
However I also wanted to address a something I noticed regarding modern American discourse and the idea of decolonization in regards to Indigenous American history.
