When it comes to tabletop RPGs, there are rarely any constants. Everything is a matter of preference and taste -- as it should be. Depending on the mood and tone of a specific game or campaign (or even the specific moment) there are so many nuanced facets to what the most important element of a tabletop RPG game. Having said all of that, we are venturing to say that we've come across something in our own games that seems to most often hold the title of "most important."
No matter what game you're playing, in what style, in what system or format: confusion is the enemy. In a game where imagination has free reign, and interpretation will different from person to person so regularly, clarity is the absolute king in order for everyone to collaborate smoothly.
We also put forth that there's a difference between player confusion and character confusion. Even in games where character madness and disjointed realities are at play (except in some rare instances for effect): unless the player clearly understands that something otherworldly and bizarre is happening to their character, they can't respond accurately in-character to the weirdness of the situation.
