My sound patches: espenkraft.com • Is"Axel F" a rip-off of Rockit? Harold Faltermeyer made the iconic theme for Beverly Hills Cop a year or so after the release of Herbie Hancock's "Rockit". The latter was released in 1983 while "Axel F" was released in Dec. 1984, cashing in on the gigantic success of the movie.
They share some similarities in the actual theme signature melodic line, but how close are they?

I use the Roland Jupiter-8 to do both signature themes in this video. "Axel F" did use the Jupiter-8 for its signature sound, but "Rockit" uses another more brassy sound. I have no idea where that comes from.
I also think I should have dialled back the attack a little on the patch I made, in this demo, but the overall intention of this video wasn't sound design, it was more the melodic themes and how close they are.
