Can AI reinforce the biases that already exist in our world?

Professor Mark Graham from the Oxford Internet Institute explains how AI can reproduce existing societal and geographical biases, with some places consistently portrayed more positively than others.

These biases can emerge because AI learns from an internet that is itself unequal and, when knowledge is limited, can fill gaps using stereotypes found in its training data.

As AI increasingly shapes how we understand the world, the research highlights the need for greater auditing, transparency and critical use of these technologies.
