In this video we address the question is addiction a choice. This is a common misconception, which can cause stigma and negatively impact someone’s chances of getting better. Substances can change the brain's chemistry, so substance use disorder isn't something you can just opt out of once it begins. The brain starts to prioritize the substance over everything else, even basic survival needs. What started as a voluntary act quickly turns into a compulsion, where the choice to use is no longer in someone’s hands.
