On 7 May 1957, ITN's Cork-born Tom St John Barry interviewed a group of Irish students about the partition of Ireland. Speaking on campus at Trinity College Dublin, the mixed group of Protestants and Catholics gave a diverse range of views on the subject. Coming roughly a generation after the violence of the Irish War of Independence and Civil War, and just before the escalation of the IRA's Border Campaign, the students’ measured and often jocular tone suggests a moment of relative stability in Anglo-Irish relations.
Filmed more than a decade before the outbreak of the Troubles in the late 1960s, the interview captures a brief window in which sectarian tensions appeared subdued and the prospect of renewed conflict seemed distant—offering a snapshot of attitudes in a quieter, often overlooked period between two more turbulent eras in modern Irish history.
