This is apparently a melody that was used with a poem called "The Last Rose of Summer". I didn't know that. Mertz didn't mention it in his sheet music or that the melody was from a tune called "The Young Man's Dream".
I've been held hostage by three tunes that have been beating the crap out of me for a couple months now. This is one of them. It's one of those tunes that seem easy at first, but contains several measures that confound the fingers. Starting at measure 16 I realized that this was going to be a serious struggle. Normally, my approach to conflict resolution is to run away. But I held on longer than usual out of mere stubbornness, certain that I could win this one. My optimism was rewarded by yet another defeat.
I think this is a decent tune, fun to play and an interesting dance for the fingers, but it will require a lot of practice to play cleanly and you'll learn something. Good luck.
