This roses square is an ideal beginners project. It can be made in any yarn or hook size, but don't forget the scale, the bigger the hook and the thicker the yarn, the bigger it will be.

I've made a few changes to the pattern
I started by chaining 6 and making* 1dc 3ch* x5 for first row
I also slightly changed how to start the picot chain around the rose. These things are a personal choice.
The rose is constructed of alternate rows of chains and petals.
the chain rows go up by a factor of 1 ie,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
where as the petal rows go up by a factor +2
ie 1 single crochet, 5 double crochet to 7 dc, 9 dc, 11 dc etc
