Derek is in love with Casey and he knows it but he doesn't want to tell anyone becuase he knows how people will react. Even so, he enjoys the moments that they share that are nice because he knows sooner than later they'll be fighting and mad at each other again. His heart breaks a little when he sees her with Sam and then he starts the fights just to make himself feel something. They continue to fight and make up over and over until Derek gets sick of it. When he goes out with Emily, Casey sees and she freaks out. They argue about it but both feel bad. (That sequence is very very quick) Casey tries to get Derek to talk but he ignores her. When she finally does get him to talk, he admits he likes her. Casey takes it much better than he expected and they end up together secretly. They agree to let no one know because they know the world won't accept it. They still fight and make up but now they're happy with how things work between them, knowing they'll always have each other.
Wow long summary. I think it works without the story line but I know some people like a story line so it can work either way.
