Brian Woods who was murdered by Provisional IRA.

Brian was a 30-year-old Protestant, married with one child, who was a Reserve RUC GC police officer fatally injured on 31st October while he was on checkpoint duty in Upper Edward Street in Newry.

A Provisional IRA terrorist fired a single shot and hit Brian in the neck. It appeared that the firing point was around 400 yards away from where Brian was standing a few yards from the RUC station.

The terrorist may have been lying in the boot of a car when he fired the shot.

Brian was immediately taken to hospital where he remained in critical condition.

During the inquest a colleague that was with Brian said that he heard a deafening bang and felt a slap to the side of his face.

He said it was "like being hit with a cricket bat".

He was told later that it was caused by a high velocity bullet that had passed his face.

Brian joined the RUC GC in February 1993 and was the 100th member of the reserve force to be murdered in the troubles.

A few months earlier, Brian and his wife had moved into a new house at Begney Road, Dromara.
