25 February 1993:
Jonathan Reid, 30-year-old Protestant, single and an RUC constable was setting up a checkpoint on the Castleblaney Road when he was shot by an IRA sniper. Const. Reid had been part of a 14-man RUC and army patrol who were stopping vehicles on the edge of the village of Crossmaglen. The inquest was told by another ovvicer: "Const. Reid was lying in cover at the side of the road and as he go to his feet, he spoke to me. Suddenly there was a loud crack and he fell into the middle of the road on his back. I searched his body for signs of wounds and found a small bullet hole on the right side of his chest. A soldier and I began giving first aid but I could see that he was slipping away. I continued to feel for a pulse and when I couldn't find one I began trying to resuscitate him". A post-mortem revealed that Const. Reid had been hit in the back by a high velocity bullet that had emerged from his chest.
