Cycling the world - Asia: 22 episode
I leave Samawah and say goodbye to the sheik before riding south towards Nasiriyah. The heat is relentless and by the afternoon I am forced to stop and hide in the shade for a few hours just to keep going. In Nasiriyah I stay with a Couchsurfing host and wait for Ahmed, an Iraqi cyclist who will ride with me towards the border with Kuwait. My host turns out to be the son of the sheik who lives next to the Ziggurat of Ur and takes me there at sunset when the site is normally closed and without paying the entrance fee. Once Ahmed arrives we leave Nasiriyah together and follow the Euphrates. We stop at a small shop for a cold coke and the owner invites us to rest, escape the heat and share lunch with him. Late at night a man in a pickup starts following and harassing us all the way to the next town. We end up at a police station where the captain offers to lock him up if I file a formal complaint. Tired and already delayed I refuse and we push on into the countryside along the river, where a local man stops us and invites us to stay the night at his home.
