Here Dylan discusses the Z-Wave capability of the Qolsys IQ Panel 4. Unlike previous panels, you don't have to add Z-Wave capability to the panel because it's built-in. The IQ Panel 4 has a Z-Wave Plus V2 700-Series Z-Wave controller built-in. It is fully compatible with all Z-Wave 700-Series and 800-Series devices.
The panel is also compatible with earlier Z-Wave device versions, but those devices will be limited by their built-in capabilities. The 700-Series and 800-Series devices offer better range, longer battery life, and overall better performance than previous iterations of the Z-Wave protocol.
An important note that Dylan emphasizes is that the Qolsys IQ Panel 4 does not support Z-Wave sensors. Although there are Z-Wave devices such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide sensors, door/window sensors, motion detectors, and others available, the Qolsys IQ Panel 4 does not support the use of these sensors. Only automation devices such as lights, locks, thermostats, water valve controllers, and other lifestyle enhancement devices are supported.
The Z-Wave protocol uses a mesh network of devices to ensure connectivity. A Z-Wave signal can hop from one device to another (within limits) to reach the intended device.
