Details just dropped from Unknownz21 (@URedditor) on X, the dumpster fire formerly known as Twitter about the potential iPhone SE 4th Generation, which we’d heard about in the past, that then got shelved and is now apparently back on the cards. Unlike the previous rumours that had it pegged as an update to the iPhone Xr body, which, honestly this far on probably wouldn’t have made sense given the current design direction, the report says it will be based on the iPhone 14’s design. That’s a great start.
It would be the first iPhone SE to gain FaceID and dump TouchID, bringing the design up to date with everything post iPhone 10, and thank the good lord Thor, it won’t have the dumb TouchID power button that I so despise from the iPad models. I’m really not a fan, it’s my least favourite part of my otherwise much loved iPad Air.
The device will also apparently get USB-C, which I guess at this point is something of a given. We’ve heard recently that Apple is looking for pricing from suppliers on the OLED panels for this too, with an SE Model I’m sure Apple will be turning the screws on getting the component prices as low as humanly possible. Makes perfect sense for the iPhone 14 body style.
Other changes mentioned though from the current iPhone 14 model would be a single camera lens, down from the ultra wide and wide combo on the current device, so any portrait mode on those cameras would have to be fully computational. And, the Action button. Apple seems to be going all in on replacing the current mute switch with this multi-purpose button, and while Unknownz21 mentioned that the Action Button was believed to be a pro model exclusive, the idea it would be coming to the SE suggests the base iPhone 15 and 15 Plus must be likely to get it too. My take is it’s going to be pretty central to the September event.
In terms of timeframe, I’d have to assume this is planned for a launch next spring, maybe March or April when we’d normally get these kinds of devices, and given the current economic climate, a decent, modern but value focused device could well be exactly what Apple needs, after iPhone sales volumes dropped for the first time in a while during the last reported quarter.
Price-wise however I don’t see this coming at the previous SE price of 429 with 64gb of storage - I’d guess we’ll be looking at a 128gb starting point with a $499 price tag, which is $30 higher than the previous SE with the same storage. I’d say that’s still a good value though, as it’ll almost certainly get the A16 inside, and gains OLED, full screen design, FaceID and that much fresher look, vs a chassis that had BARELY changed since the iPhone 6 in 2014! Of course, the previous SE had wireless charging, but this new SE will almost certainly also add MagSafe to that, another bonus. This thing will be KILLER for businesses, perfect as a work phone for sales teams. They don’t need a bunch of cameras and all the bells and whistles, but a lower cost phone that’s capable, has decent battery and all the other modern tech that doesn’t look 10 years old would be a great benefit. It’s also a perfect starter phone when your kids get old enough for that vs the standard hand me downs. And maybe, just maybe Apple could use this to test drive their own wireless modems instead of buying from third parties?

#iCaveAnswers how long should an Apple Pencil last? I picked up a 2nd gen in June 20212, now won’t connect and can’t be found by the iPad. Seems like a dead battery. It’s only 2 years old and out of warranty, is that to be expected?
