Investing in manufacturing chips is one thing, but there needs to be a consolidated effort in the research and development of the materials behind next-generation semiconductors, as well as the training of the people behind it all. Part of the CHIPS Act funding is to build a series of National Semiconductor Technology Centers, and there is an effort to push for the first of such hubs to be based in Albany, NY, as it already has a mix of commercial, academic, and state partnerships investing in doing exactly that. Today we're looking at why this matters, and why Albany is suited to be the first.
[0:00] This is 2nm!
[0:22] Securing the Supply Chain
[2:15] Why IBM?
[3:55] Research at Albany NanoTech
[5:02] ASIC Coalition
[6:38] $52 Billion CHIPS Act
[8:45] Inside the Labs and Fabs and 2nm
[10:10] Materials Research
[11:55] Companies, Universities, and Government
[12:44] Heterogeneous Integration Research
[14:03] Solving the big problems
[15:21] US Investment in Semis
