Understanding the scientific method goes beyond memorization—it’s about active inquiry, problem-solving, and evidence-based reasoning. In this video, teachers demonstrate how students can engage with the scientific process through a hands-on investigation using the OB-SCERTAINER™, a black box containing a hidden steel ball.

By tilting, rotating, and shaking the box, students gather indirect observations to develop and test hypotheses about the internal structure. This process mirrors how scientists explore unobservable phenomena, reinforcing key principles of hypothesis formation, experimentation, and data analysis.

This engaging, first-day-of-class activity challenges students to think critically, collaborate, and refine their ideas based on evidence. Instead of simply memorizing the scientific method, they experience it in action—learning how to construct models, analyze data, and revise their conclusions.

Ideal for high school science classrooms, this investigation provides a memorable, hands-on introduction to scientific inquiry, equipping students with essential skills they will use throughout their studies in physics, chemistry, biology, and beyond.
