Inventor Ioannis Farkonides was born in Cyprus, in the village of Kalopanagiotis, in 1884. He became a teacher and worked in the greater area of Limassol and mainly in the village of Moutoullas. In his spare time as a restless spirit he dealt mainly with various subjects of science. In then British-occupied Cyprus on January 23, 1935, Ioannis Farkonides filed his
patent in London entitled Improvements in or relating to apparatus for deriving power from moving fluids. The patent was officially registered
on March 5, 1936.
After the patent was granted, he accepted proposals for its use. Even Nazi Germany was interested in a written letter to Ioannis Farkonides to buy it. With the outbreak of World War II, in 1939 this patent "was considered the
property of then Great Britain" with the result that its inventor could not exercise his copyright. In this way, the patent was commissioned by England for military purposes.
This invention is currently used in airplanes, flying dolphins, hovercrafts, etc. Nowhere and in no scientific book is the discovery and invention of our grandfather Ioannis Farkonides, who was the first to deal successfully with this issue, mentioned.
