Invader must die is based on famous stepped-tone generator a circuit that utilizes a 556 dual timer IC with additional LFO that modulates the signal. The controls are two potentiometers.
Forrest Mims titled the circuit "Sound Synthesizer" in 1982 then later called "Stepped-Tone Generator". The circuit creates sounds similar to a plucked violin. Electronic music experimenters begin exploring this circuit and owing to the similarity of sounds it makes to the Atari 2600, Kaustic Machines coined the name Atari Punk Console.
