"Introduction to the Remodeled Getty Provenance Index in Arches" is a 4-part series introducing the Getty Provenance Index (GPI), its new interface in Arches, and how the remodeled GPI structures its data.

The remodel of the Getty Provenance Index has been a huge undertaking to ensure the longevity of this long-standing resource supported by Getty since the 1980s. It has enabled new uses of provenance data and resulted in a holistic digital ecosystem based on linked data and its affordances for advanced art historical research.
This is a transitional period as we move platforms, therefore both the new and the legacy sites are running in parallel. We are excited to have put the data out in this new form so that we can explore its uses and connections as a community. The GPI is evolving, so in the months ahead we look forward to garnering your feedback to help us improve the user experience.

The Getty Provenance Index
The Getty Provenance Index® provides open access to millions of resources from dealer stock books, sales catalogs, and archival inventories that provide essential information for tracing the history of ownership, circulation and display of artworks, and identifying the different individuals and institutions shaping those histories.
The Remodeled Getty Provenance Index in Arches
As part of a project to adapt to significant advances in digital technology and provide enhanced access and query capabilities, the Getty Provenance Index has been remodeled as linked open data and migrated to the Arches platform. As users transition to the Arches platform, the remodeled and legacy versions of the Getty Provenance Index platform will continue to run in parallel, and any plan to discontinue its support will be communicated in advance.
Contents of the Remodeled Getty Provenance Index
The databases that are currently in the remodeled platform are:
Dealer Stock Books – Transactional records from prominent galleries and dealers, including Goupil & Cie./Boussod, Valadon & Cie. (Paris, 1846–1919), and M. Knoedler & Co. (New York, 1872–1970)
Sales Catalogs – Auction house and dealer sales catalogs documenting works of art offered for sale in Europe from 1650 to 1945
Note: The migration of Archival Inventories data into the remodeled Getty Provenance is in progress and is currently available in the legacy platform. Please consult the project page for more information about new GPI projects.
