This is the first part of a series about technologies that power our world. Today's topic covers at a high level the properties of SQL (structured query language), which is a powerful tool to communicate with databases.

SQL is the standard language for communicating with relational databases, and the concept we are discussing today applies to relational databases, rather than SQL the language itself.

Why is it important to understand relational databases? When it comes to designing scalable systems, a database is your source of truth. Some databases are built for scale, some are built for consistency, and some are built for approximation. It's critical to understand what, why, when to use a certain type of database, and relational databases are built for some specific use cases.
