One of the most salient measures of economic opportunity to individuals is income. How income is distributed, grows, and persists provide important insights into who has access to economic opportunity, where opportunities are flourishing, and where they are not. A deeper, richer understanding of income and earnings across America is the motivation behind the Income Distributions and Dynamics in America (IDDA) project from the Opportunity & Inclusive Growth Institute. This new resource combines income and earnings measures, detailed demographic characteristics, and geography. Available now for public download, the project’s statistics can be used to analyze income fluctuations, income mobility, and income differences within and across groups in the United States for a two-decade period leading up to the pandemic.
This introductory event explained more about what is in the IDDA datasets, what questions the data can answer, insights from ongoing analysis, and what’s next. The webinar was hosted by the team developing IDDA as well as Nathaniel Hendren, professor of economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Institute Advisory Board member.
