Mariko Kusumoto grew up in a 400-year old temple in Japan, and the beauty of the landscape and the textures of the temple always intrigued her. After working with metal exclusively for almost 18 years, the artist began to experiment with tsumami zaiku, the ancient art of folding and pinching fabric.
This exhibit, including a site-specific sculptural installation, celebrates Mariko Kusumoto’s meticulous technique and deep appreciation for nature and tradition, while highlighting contemporary Japanese craftsmanship.
Light as Air will be on view at the main museum through April 5, 2026.
