Musician and academic Mykaell Riley arrives at Interview City ready to tell it like it is. One of the original members of Steel Pulse as well as a successful writer, producer and performer for over 25 years, he’s currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster and Director of the Bass Culture Research Unit, having recently curated the recent “Bass Culture” exhibition. Articulate and unapologetic in his advocacy, Mykaell talks openly about his experience of being both Black and British, and makes the case for a musical culture that continues to be seriously underappreciated and marginalized. Two towering figures from the early days of Jamaican recorded music tell their story to reggae historian Steve Barrow. The wonderfully named Count Machuki was the ur-DJ – the first man to talk over records, and as such can be considered the progenitor of rap. Beginning in the early 50s with the legendary sound system Tom the Great Sebastian, he became the number 1 selector, and was, as he recalls, the first man to play strictly Jamaican records. A man of the people, “I tried to make people happy”. The rest, as they say, is history. Don Letts keeps them in the frame.

Divine Operating System is the second studio album released by Supreme Beings of Leisure in 2002.
After the release of the debut album, the band decided to split leaving Geri and Ramin as the main members of SBL, quickly releasing the second SBL album Divine Operating System in 2002.

Part two of a mid-90s interview by reggae historian Steve Barrow and cameraman Don Letts with two of most influential figures in the development of the art of DJ. Stitt takes up the story with the crucial tracks he recorded for Clancy Eccles, describes how Coxsone’s Downbeat became the dominant sound of the day, and how he made a virtue of his unusual physiognomy, following the local popularity of the Sergio Leone classic “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”. (Stitt was the self-styled “Ugly One”). He then adds some thoughts on the typical deal for artist of the day (raw). Its back to the Count then for his take on modern dancehall—and dancing, and the two finish by reprising some of their classic lines.
