Sumboornam (Sam ) Moodley was born in Dundee in Northern Natal, matriculated at the Dundee Secondary School, and qualified with a Masters Degree in Cultural Studies from the University of Kwazulu Natal. As a cultural activist she was involved in Theatre for Consciousness Raising through the Theatre Council Of Natal (TECON). Her political involvement in the Black Consciousness movement and the Black Community Programmes resulted in a 5 year banning order and house arrest. She became involved in the Disability Sector, enriching the lives of persons with Disability through the Arts. Her gender activism found her forming the Women in Action ,South Africa
(WIASA) and Women for Awareness (WOFA).She lectured on Social Justice Issues and in Language and Communication. She also contributed to various publications such as Research on Curries Fountain (Rocs), Foreword to Prodigal Daughters(Lauretta Ngcobo), Reflections of Women from the BC Movement.
