Mountains are home to 15% of the world's population, and contain roughly 50% of our global biodiversity hotspots. They also provide fresh water to half the world's people, and have been sources of inspiration and reverence for millennia.

But, while they mighty and strong, mountains are under threat. Climate change, over-development, and exploitation are all causing the mountains we love - and on which we all depend - to deteriorate. Glaciers are melting, mountain people - some of the world's poorest - are suffering, and mountain ecosystems are crumbling.

Today, December 11, 2020, is International Mountain Day, a day we can all gather to celebrate mountains, mountain people and cultures, and mountain environments...and take action to protect and preserve them. The 2020 IMD theme is Mountain Biodiversity, encompassing all that mountains host and provide for us.

This film - featuring the music of Mountain Partnership Ambassadors @ludovicoeinaudi (ludovicoeinaudi.com/) and his composition "Svanire," and film footage from @jake_norton (https://jakenorton.com) - celebrates mountains, mountain biodiversity, and International Mountain Day - today, and every day!

Please share with the hashtag #MountainsMatter, and keep celebrating mountains!
