Today is International Human Rights Day. For more than 70 years, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – adopted on this day in 1948 – has been an essential foundation for human rights laws the world over, including our own Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act. The Charter guides how the State should treat its citizens, which sometimes can involve balancing one person’s rights against another’s or against the public interest. The Ombudsman is Victoria’s human rights complaint handler and investigator. We play an important role in ensuring public authorities in Victoria respect human rights in their decisions and actions.
