Intermissions is a range of Young Film Programmers-focused activities, programmed by Film Hub South East and Reel Connections.
For this Intermissions Industry Session, we spoke with BAFTA-winning filmmaker John Maclean. These sessions are designed to give our Young Film Programmers and others the opportunity to talk directly to people working in the film exhibition sector and related professions, find out more about what their work involves and their career paths so far. In this session, John spoke about his career path from music promo videos and short films, to being awarded the 'World Cinema Jury Prize: Dramatic' at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival for his debut feature Slow West starring Michael Fassbender. As well as his experience of making and promoting this film, John will also be talking about the independent film sector, and the role its cinemas and festivals have played in opening up his work to audiences around the world.
John was a founder member of The Beta Band 1997 and then The Aliens. He made most of their music promos which were released on DVD as The Best of The Beta Band Film. His first independent short, Man on a Motorcycle, starred Michael Fassbender, and this fruitful collaboration lead to his second short Pitch Black Heist starring Fassbender and Liam Cunningham. Commissioned by Film4, the film won the 2012 Best Short Film BAFTA. Slow West was John’s first feature film. The film was critically acclaimed and went on to win the 'World Cinema Jury Prize: Dramatic' at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. The same year, the Village Voice called him 'a supremely promising talent' and BAFTA named him as a 'Brit to Watch'.
