Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter is the fourth album by American rapper Jay-Z. It came out on December 28, 1999, through Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam Recordings. According to USA Today critic Steve Jones, the album showed a return to the street style of Jay-Z's first album, Reasonable Doubt, from 1996. Vol. 3... had beats made by producers like Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, K-Rob, DJ Clue, Rockwilder, DJ Premier, and Irv Gotti. Critics liked the album, and it went straight to number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 462,000 copies in the first week. It's sold over three million copies since then and got a triple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
