I filmed the contractor swapping out our electric meter today for the scary new digital one. I have read a lot of complaints about these things and have feared this day. I run a server farm and cooling here at the house and cringe at the thought of having to relocate it because of larger power bills. I have been trending our power usage here for 13 years and I also have a whole house digital power meter installed inside, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I do see two benefits to the new meter. First is the obvious RF modem that allows them to collect data without needing to send someone. The second is that their new system will notify when a meter disappears. This allows them to see power outages to the customer level automatically.
They did actually come to the door first which allowed me to save my work on the pc, so kudos for that.
Feel free to ask me in a few months how the new power bills compare to previous years.
