One of the best ways to self-host Home Assistant is by setting up a virtual machine using Proxmox. This requires you to create a virtual machine and then use the shell to download the official Home Assistant VM image and import it.
Using Proxmox to self-host Home Assistant allows you to run the full Home Assistant operating system while also being able to run other operating systems and services. This is something especially useful if you are using a more powerful machine. The Home Assistant software is fairly well optimized and is not a giant resource sink, so squeezing more out of your hardware can be incredibly useful.
