Watch our art handling team install Archibald John Motley, Jr.’s Gettin’ Religion (1948), from the Whitney's collection. This work was recently installed as part of the Edges of Ailey exhibition, which is now on view on the 5th floor of the Whitney Museum, from Sept 25, 2024 through Feb 9, 2025.
For Alvin Ailey, dance and music were art forms of and for the people, originating and enduring in homes, the streets, and other everyday spaces. Rather than see dance as merely a response to music, he saw that both allowed an artist to express the spectrum of their feelings and experiences—a pillar of Ailey’s creative philosophy.

Edges of Ailey is organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art in collaboration with the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation.
