Phantasy Star[a] is a series of console role-playing video games and other supplementary media created by Sega. The series debuted in 1987 on the Master System with Phantasy Star, and continues into the present with Phantasy Star Online 2 and other extensions of the Phantasy Star Online sub-series. Each of the games in the series features a science fantasy setting featuring a cross-genre combination of magic and technology.
The first four games in the series are set in or related to the fictional planetary system of Algol, and are single-player turn-based role-playing games. Later games in the series are chiefly action role-playing games, and some contain massively multiplayer online game elements. There are currently four distinct Phantasy Star subseries, each set in their own universe. Cameos or nods to other subseries may appear, and there are concepts and terminology shared across them, similarly to Suikoden, Breath of Fire, Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy.
The original series takes place in the Algol Solar System, which consists of four planets: Palma, a fertile agricultural world; Motavia, a desert planet; Dezoris, an ice planet; and the mysterious Rykros, whose elongated orbit brings it within visible range only once every thousand years. Players travel to all four planets throughout the series, interacting with each unique set of inhabitants and discovering the secrets to the solar systems genesis, which is irrevocably tied to an ancient conflict.
The original Phantasy Star was released for the Master System in Japan on December 20, 1987.[3] It was one of the earliest cartridges to include battery backed RAM for saving game positions. The game featured 3D maze-like dungeons, which players traversed in a first-person mode. Phantasy Star, along with Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy, distinguished itself as a pioneer of what came to be defined as console role-playing.[4] The first four games take place in the same universe, as opposed to many RPG series such as Final Fantasy, wherein successive game settings are unrelated, or, at most, superficially related. Each major Phantasy Star game adds onto the series overall story, culminating in Phantasy Star IV which ties all of the series plot elements together.
Both Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe are their own series based on the original Phantasy Star games. They continue the theme of a persistent game universe, but are set in different planetary systems than the original games.
There is a small misconception that Phantasy Star was created to rival Final Fantasy, due to their similar titles. This is highly unlikely, as the first entries of both series were released within two days of each other.
Phantasy Star Gaiden[c], released in 1992 for the Game Gear, is a spin-off of the original Phantasy Star and takes place on a colony known as Copto, founded by the heroine Alis Landale. In this new setting, Alis is once again called upon to battle evil, now in the form of a being known as Kaburon, which she is able to seal away. The majority of the game then follows the adventures of new characters, Minina and Alec, some 400 years later until they reunite with Alis, who had been in cryogenic sleep in a vigil against Kaburons return. After Copto is saved, the game foreshadows the reemergence of evil back in Algol in Phantasy Star II.")

Deltarune is an episodic role-playing video game in development by Toby Fox[a] as a follow-up to his 2015 video game Undertale. In the game, the player controls a human teenager, Kris, who is destined to save the world together with Susie, a monster, and Ralsei, a prince from the Dark World. During their quest to seal the Dark Fountains prophesied to end the world, the group makes both friends and foes. The combat system is turn-based and uses bullet hell mechanics. Similarly to Undertale, enemy encounters can be resolved peacefully or through violence.
Development of Deltarune began in 2012, three years before Foxs previous game, Undertale, was released. Though it shares some characters with Undertale and features similar gameplay, it takes place in a separate setting and uses an overhauled battle system with multiple party members. The games story is divided into multiple chapters that have been released gradually; its first and second chapters were released for free in October 2018 and September 2021 respectively. The next two chapters were released in June 2025 as part of a paid version, which will incorporate future chapters as free updates. The fifth chapter is set to release in 2026, and the games menu suggests a sixth and seventh chapter. Initially, the game was released on macOS and Windows, before being ported to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2019, and the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 in 2025. The released chapters have been praised by critics for their soundtrack, narrative, and sense of humor.
During Chapter 2, the player can begin an alternate route (commonly referred to as the Snowgrave or Genocide route, and internally referred to as the Weird or Side B route)[16][17][18][19][c] by forcing Noelle to use her magic to freeze enemies, with the help of Spamton, a spambot normally encountered in an optional sidequest that leads to his superboss fight, who sells a Thorn Ring that enhances Noelles power. As the player continues to manipulate Noelle, she is eventually forced to freeze Berdly, becoming shaken by her actions and too exhausted to participate in Queens plans. Ralsei informs Queen of the Roaring preemptively, preventing her battle. Spamton, who took over the mansion and upgraded himself, tries to stop Kris, but is frozen by Noelle as Kris seals the Fountain. In the Light World, Berdly is found in a coma, and Noelle later questions if the Dark World really was a dream. Chapter 2 ends identically to that of the normal route, with Kris opening a Dark Fountain.
Chapter 3 proceeds as normal, but in Chapter 4, Noelle asks Kris if they can talk privately after Kris removes the soul. Entering the ventilation system, the soul overhears a conversation between Kris and Noelle, where it is revealed that during the previous night Kris took Berdly to the hospital and visited Noelle. During their visit, Kris claimed the Dark World was just a dream and removed a thorn, the Thorn Rings form in the Light World, from her hand. The soul enters the room, takes control of Kris, and directly communicates with Noelle, revealing to her that the soul can read her thoughts and that the previous events actually happened, before forcing the thorn back into her. Afterwards, Kris furiously throws the soul in a trash can and beats it up, before Carol tells everyone to leave the house. The chapter continues normally until the end, where Carol leaves a phone message for Kris, telling them that Noelle is looking forward to seeing them at the festival tomorrow.[20]")
